I'm pretty sure that before SP1 came out we could 'clear the decks' so to speak and get a good, clean view of the outside with no panels or cockpit views to obscure anything. As I recall you just pressed 'W' a couple of times to cycle through the main 2D panel, the mini panel and then you could pan around a full 360 degrees without the virtual cockpit popping up automatically.

Does anyone know a way to disable this behaviour? I love the virtual cockpit and I love the 2D panels but sometimes I just want to look at the view!

Found LOTS of posts elsewhere on this. Seems many, many people are bothered by it too. A source in regular contact with the design studios said the behaviour was never intended and was a result of a bug in the code that was fixed as a result of changes in SP1. Sigh, they fixed the one bug everyone liked . Anyway, here's the work-around if you're interested:-

For each aircraft open it's aircraft.cfg file and find the [VIEWS] section. Add 5 to the third number in the comma-delimitted list and save the file.

That's all there is to it. You may need to tweak the value - it's specified in feet and doing this just adds 5ft to your eyepoint but it's enough to get you out of the cockpit and give you an unobstructed view all round. Some people have gone for bigger numbers and other have gone below the plane but I've found a small addition does the job and t/o and landing is just like the good ol' days.smiley
