How to use Slew Mode Effectively |
When making videos, there are many different ways to approach producing smooth and professional shots. The slew mode is a very effective way at using angles to one’s advantage. This is especially important when one needs to focus on different aspects of a scenery. Through proper use of the slew mode, the viewer will get a good picture of the scenery one is showcasing without the distraction of poor shot selection. The brilliant thing about using slew mode in Flight Simulator is that it is a fluid motion that one can control. One has full control over its speed. Here is how to use the slew mode.
The two major problems people face when using the slew mode is jumpy movements and poor speed management. Many people use their joystick to control the speed and while using the joystick to check out a scenery is more efficient, recording while using the joystick becomes problematic as one has less control over small movements and speed. By using the keyboard instead, one can produce a more polished shot since one then has more control over small movements.
The keyboard is great for using the slew mode since one has full control of direction and speed through the touch of a few keys. First off, to enable the slew mode, go into the Flight Simulator “Controls” page -> “Buttons and Keys” -> Flight Mode “Slew”. Look for the commands “Slew Forward; Backward; Left; Right; Up; Down; Rotate Left; Rotate Right” and assign these commands to whatever keys are easiest to use. When completed, load Flight Simulator in an aircraft that does not have a 3D cockpit. When ready, enter into slew mode by pressing “y.” Now for some practice. Tap the key that is assigned to move forward and notice how the movement in the simulator is moving forward ever so slowly. Press it again and the speed increases. Compare this to using the joystick and it is apparent that one has much more control over direction and speed via the keyboard. This trick works for all of the slew mode commands, and can be combined with eachother for added customization of direction and speed. This is all that is required to have a complete knowledge of how to effectively shoot sequences via the slew mode function! With a little bit of practice, as well as experimenting, anyone can become profficient at making entertaining FSX videos. |

FSX.cfg tweaks |
FSX has to be one of the most customizable versions of MS FS ever. This is a great thing for the techy types who are accustomed to making tweaks behind the GUI. On the other hand, those that are less inclined to “monkey” with anything outside the usual set of sliders within FSX are potentially missing out on some great enhancements … and we need all the tweaking we can get! These tweaks can be made in the FSX.cfg file.
Where is the FSX.cfg file?
On Win XP, you’ll find it here: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX. In Windows Vista & 7, you will want to make sure hidden files are shown and then look here: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX. Sometimes you will not be able to save any changes to the .cfg file in Win 7. Do this: Press the windows key, type in notepad, right click notepad, run as administrator, open the .cfg file in notepad, make changes, save.
Note: Before doing any modifications to the FSX.cfg, make sure to create a back up copy of it.
[MAIN] Tweaks
Under the [MAIN] section of the FSX.cfg file, add the following:
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33
This gives more processing time towards scenery versus rendering and helps to reduce the blurries.
The perfbucket setting adjusts autogen detail level. Setting a lower level gives better performance.
PERFBUCKET=n where n=0 – 7
Default value is 6. Recommended value is 4.
If you wish to disable the pre-load of the default flight when FSX starts up, add this:
DISABLEPRELOAD=1
[DISPLAY] Tweaks
You can disable the notifications that appear on the screen when you engage brakes, etc. Change the following values to show:
InfoBrakesEnable=False
InfoParkingBrakesEnable=False
InfoPauseEnable=False
InfoSlewEnable=False
InfoStallEnable=False
InfoOverspeedEnable=False
You may notice when panning around the virtual cockpit that it takes quite a bit of time to move around. You can speed that up by adding this:
PANRATE=200
If you have a multi-core processor, you can adjust this setting to take more advantage of the extra calculation power:
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=n (n=30-40 for dual core, 70-90 for quad core)
[TERRAIN] tweak
A big difference between FS9 and FSX was the radius in which autogen scenery was to be drawn, and that consumes quite a bit of processing power to provide, thus affects frame rates. Microsoft gave us the ability to reduce that radius that does not significantly impact the experience. In the [TERRAIN] section, add these:
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=1000
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=800
[GRAPHICS] tweak
Those of you who benefit from a cutting edge graphics card that has 1 Gig+ RAM onboard will be able to benefit from the following tweak more so than others. There are some recent add-on’s that employ ultra high resolution graphics (2048×2048 and 4096×4096). With this setting, you allow the full resolution to be experienced in-game.
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 (for 4096×4096 textures)
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 (for 2048×2048 textures)
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024 (default value when global texture resolution is set to very high)
Experimentation required
None of the setting suggestions are perfect for your individual set-up. I recommend making minor adjustments to get the performance versus experience to your liking. Enjoy!

New Review - FSFlyingSchool |
Introduction

Senior staff reviewer Jeff Shyluk goes back to school to break some bad habits while exploring FlyingSchool. "This a useful product that simulates having a Flight Instructor along with you as you fly in FSX, FS2004, or FS2002."
"It provides a simulated flight instructor who watches over how you handle your aircraft from taxi to final touchdown, and who can grade your performance. As well, your flight data can be logged and even uploaded onto the Internet so you can see how you compare with other sim pilots."... |

Flight Simulator X in 3D |
Introduction

Flying in the real world has always been something contradictionary to me. Impressive and attractive but also frightening and dangerous. Thats the way I experience it, at least.
Therefore I am so glad there is something like flightsimming, where you can observe and fly planes without the slightest risk of any injury, unless it be an exploding videocard or overheated processor..............

Install FSX Aircrafts |
Introduction

Installing third party aircraft will greatly enhance your experience with FSX.The majority of complaints installing add-on aircraft stem from a lack of procedural knowledge and folder/file placement. Microsoft's FSX has differed from the "norm" of the past few releases with this go around. Once the directory structure is understood you will be well on your way to building a decent airplane library for yourself...... |

FSX FPS Guide |
Introduction
 This week saw the release of Microsoft's latest and greatest, Flight
Simulator X. I know many of PMDG's customers rushed out to the store to buy it
and returned home only to be met with a near slideshow of sub 10FPS performance.
I had the same initial reaction, but took the time to apply various tweaks and

Flight Simulator X: Performance tweaks |
Introduction
 Flight Simulator X has not even been officially released in the USA, and we
already have a handful of people complaining about its performance. It's become
pretty much clear that you need recent hardware to run FSX decently, but even
people with high-end systems are having trouble finding optimal settings for it.
The major performance hit comes with the new autogen trees and buildings, which
can completely ruin your flight experience over big cities if not configured
properly. ..

Do you want to do something else than flying? |
Introduction
 In FS2004, it was possible to make AI aircraft flyable. But in FSX, there is
more than only AI air traffic. Ships, ferries, vehicles and even animals are now
part of the AI system. Wouldn't it be nice to drive the schoolbus from the Loopy
Larry mission? Not only would it be kinda funny to drive around in a schoolbus
on your favorite airport, but you can even redo the mission in a multiplayer
session!... |

Do FS2004 aircraft work in FSX? |
Introduction
 The GMAX 3d models are
certainly compatible with eachother, allthough some animations like the
behaviour of the landing gear may look strange in FSX. At least the default
FS2004 aircraft seem all working fine in FSX. However, some third-party
developed aircraft might use old FS2004 gauges that can cause problems in FSX,
or even crash the program. So, in general, you just have to experiment with it.
General instructions for FS2004 aircraft:<
1. Copy the Aircraft folder e.g. "Posky 737-800 AAL"
to \Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator
X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ .....click the title of this article to be continued.... |
